The view looks to the east towards the centre of Edinburgh.  Many of the features described below will be more easily seen on the enlarged photo.

-   Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park feature prominently, taking up much of the upper part of the picture.

-   Edinburgh Castle is the collection of light buildings on high ground near the centre of the picture.  To the left of the castle, the tower of St Gile's Church and the green dome of the Head Office of Bank of Scotland at the top of the Mound can be seen.  The Caledonian Hotel at the West End of Princes Street is the red stone building on lower ground in front of the castle.

-  The tower of the Balmoral Hotel at the East End of Princes Street is at the extreme left of the picture, with the Firth of Forth behind it.  To the right of the Balmoral Hotel tower is the tall dark spire of the Scott Monument.  Further to the right is the green dome of the former St George's Church, now New Register House in Charlotte Square

-  The dark spires of St Mary's Cathedral at Palmerston Place in the West End of Edinburgh are in the centre of the picture
