6 October 1876

Halton House is eight miles to the west of Edinburgh, a combination of an old Scottish baronial house and Scoto-French chateau, with later additions in the Renaissance style, but by 1876 had lost some of its former glory.

The light was weak, requiring exposures from ten to thirty minutes, during which one of the party told stories to the photographers.

Outdoor Meeting

12 April 1877

The first Outdoor Meeting of the Season took place at Cadzow Forest near Hamilton on Thursday 12 April and was perhaps the most successful that our Society has ever had, there being thirteen cameras in the field and 100 plates exposed.

Contrary to normal practice there was a good number of different processes and most of the apparatus was of a very superior description (thanks to the late exhibition).

John Nicol commented on the photographs taken during this Outdoor Meeting in his Notes for the North, published in the British Journal of Photography.    [BJP:  4 May 1877;  p.211]

Notwithstanding a strong wind, there was the usual amount of enthusiasm.

7 cameras [6 emulsion + 1 albumen]  -  39 plates were exposed.

A description of this outing appeared in the British Journal of Photography     [BJP:  18 May 1877;  p.239]

Outdoor Meeting

21 June 1877

The weather not very favourable for photographic work, but a goodly number of plates were exposed

The British Journal of Photography reported:

"The place of rendezvous, the Mound, was left at 9.25, but by a misunderstanding on the part of the driver, the party was driven to near Ormiston, and the place of destination was not reached till considerably after midday.

This, however, as it turned out, was not a matter for regret, as the drive through a district altogether new to those present was very beautiful and much enjoyed.

NOTE:

Ormiston is about 10 miles east of Edinburgh.

Arniston is about 10 miles south-east of Edinburgh

[BJP:  19 June 1877;  p.309]
