Edinburgh Photographic Society

 Outings

1881-1890

1881

Out-door Meeting

16 June 1881

9.40 train from Edinburgh to Gorebridge.

EPS members were invited by Dr Sidey - late Vice President to visit his residence, Stobbmill House..

A large number availed themselves; in spite of the weather proving rather unfavourable there was a good muster of cameras

After refreshments, the gentlemen with Dr Sidey placed themselves and cameras in wagonettes and drove to the grounds of Arniston.

The conveyances were dismissed at Temple, with the ruins of a picturesque old church, and the party proceeded back to Stobbmill House on foot, where various groups were taken to commemorate a most pleasant and enjoyable day.

About 50 plates were exposed by the party altogether.

Then dinner, speeches and a return to Edinburgh by train.

Annual Picnic

Several members having cameras, a number of plates were exposed and several groups taken.

Several valuable prizes, presented by various members of the Society, were awarded to winners of the games.

The weather was all that could be desired, and the picnic a decided success.

Out-door Meeting

6 April 1883

9.30 train to Falkland Road - about 23/4 miles from the town.

"The weather being exceptionally fine, the walk was much enjoyed, and some good pictures might have been got on the road, had not the majority resolved that the cameras were not to be unpacked until we reached our destination, an arrangement considered necessary in consequence of the exhilarating walk, and the fine sea breeze crossing the Forth, creating a very keen appetite.

Accordingly, luncheon was hastily taken ...No time was lost in bringing a battery of cameras, such as the old place had never seen before, to bear on the principal subject of the day; and a very fine subject it is, both as a picture and likewise for its many associations with the events recorded in Scottish history."

The party then visited Falkland House with its peacocks, dell, waterfall and thatched houses.

"At about 4 o’ clock the members met at the hotel, where a towsy tea was quickly dispatched, to allow of a plate to be exposed on the interior of the palace, before the conveyance started to catch the 5.30 train to Edinburgh."
