Despite the initial impression that this may be an early view from Calton Hill (apart from the fact that the North British Hotel appears, near the centre of the picture) this photo was actually taken in 1950.

Many of the views from Calton Hill look to the west along Princes Street and include Edinburgh Castle in the background.

However, this photo was taken from a point further to the north on Calton Hill, and so show includes the old buildings in (the street named) Calton Hill in the foreground.
