Subscription Rates

5/- Subscription + 5/- Joining Fee

When EPS was established in 1861, it charged an initial entry fee of 5/- and a subscription of 5/- pa.  For many years, the society used the services of a Collector to bring in the subscriptions.  The Collector retained 5% of the amount collected.

In addition to the annual subscription, there was a Joining Fee of 5/-, but in Feb 1866 the EPS rules were changed to allow ladies to join without paying the Joining Fee.  This was not sufficient to entice the ladies into the society.  No ladies joined during the remainder of the 1866 season.

5/- Subscription continues

The subscription  continued for over 30 years - or in the case of a few members for over seventy years!

When EPS acquired its own premises in at 38 Castle Street, it raised the ordinary subscription rate to half a guinea (10/6d).  The ordinary subscription rate applied to all new members, and to all existing members who wished to use the society's darkrooms.

Original Members

Those existing members who did not wish to use the new darkrooms were able to remain members at a subscription rate of 5/- per year.  These members were described as Original Members. 

As late as 1932, when the ordinary subscription rate was one guinea pa, there were still some Original Members paying their 5/- pa subscription.

Subscriptions in Later Years

These have been the subscription rates each year.  Years normally began on 1 October, 1 November or 1 December.
