S & N Brewery Closed The Scottish & Newcastle (S & N) Brewery beside the Union Canal at Fountainbridge closed in 2005 and the land is now, at November 2005, expected to be sold for development. |

Plans Announced It was announced in November 2005 that development plans had been drawn up in conjunction with S & N Breweries , British Waterways and developers, for the site of the former S & N brewery beside the Union Canal. It is proposed to build offices and around 400 houses on this site and that these will be situated around a 'mini-marina' near Viewforth Bridge. It is expected that the South Fountainbridge site will be bought, at a cost of at least £60m, by the consortium that acquired the nearby North Fountainbridge site - developers AMA (New Town) Ltd, Grosvenor and Royal Bank of Scotland Edinburgh Evening News: November 26, 2005, p.11 |

2. St Kentigern's Church Proposed demolition |

St Kentigern's Church stands on the southern bank of the Union Canal at St Peter's Place. The church has not been used for several years and is now threatened with demolition to make way for a three storey building for housing (18 apartments), restaurant and bar. The church was built in 1897 but was used as a church only until 1941. However, the Edinburgh heritage body, the Cockburn Association have objected to this proposal on the grounds that the church is one of the few buildings of historic interest on this section of the canal. The editorial in the Edinburgh Evening News has lent its support to saving the church and so preventing this section of the canal becoming too bland. |
