57 Causewayside

Thank you to Alan Jackson, owner of an antique shop at 67 Causewayside, for allowing me to reproduce this old photograph of a nearby shop - at 57 Causewayside.

I have not been able to date this photograph very precisely.

I've checked old editions of the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory and found that Alex Meikle's Grocer & Spirit Merchant shop arrived at 57 Causewayside some time between 1885 and 1890 and it remained there until the 1930s.

"I'd just like to remark how expensive tea was compared with 'Extremely Old Scotch' and 'Fine Rum from Jamaica'. "
