London
Monopoly is a board game that involves throwing dice and
travelling around the board, buying and renting properties.
Monopoly, initially based on locations in Atlantic City, has been sold by
Parker Brothers in USA since 1934. It has become the best selling
board game in the world.
The British edition is based on locations in London. It
was first
sold by Waddington's in 1936. The board for the British
edition includes:
- one London railway station on each side of the
board.
- twenty-two London streets, spread around the
board, beginning with the cheapest (Old Kent Road) and gradually
increasing in price up to the most expensive (Mayfair).
I had wondered, while playing Monopoly, what some of these
stations and streets might look like, so I took a walk around
London a few times in the 1990s and took the photos above. Please click on
