Thank you to Danny Callaghan for sending me this photo taken by his Dad in 1957 or 1958.

The Waves

"Judging by how crowed the raft is I would assume that the waves are about to begin, the highlight of any visit the the Pool.    No doubt I am somewhere in the water.

Some will remember that they used to have a rowing boat to carry out rescues etc.    I only ever saw it used once and it was an accident during the waves.   Regulars of that time will remember everyone cramming onto the raft and trying to stay on, and everyone pushing.

The raft had heavy ropes round the sides.   One day one swimmer was determined no hang on and he was flung off but held on to the ropes around the side and looked like he dislocated his shoulder.   The waves were stopped, to everyone's disgust, and the rowing boat with lifeguards launched."

Diving Boards

"Here is another photo taken by Danny's Dad.  It is of the diving boards at Portobello Open Air Bathing Pool in 1957-58."
