Painting on a clock face

St George's Church

Here is a view looking along a quiet George Street towards St George's Church in Charlotte Square, long before the arrival of vehicles and parking meters in George Street.

This painting is on the door of an old American clock that Carlos Navarrete of Brazil has restored to working condition.  The clock has travelled with Carlos since he bought it almost 30 years ago in Teesside.

Carlos tells me:

The Clock

The clock was manufactured in the US, between 1840 and 1845, for export to the UK. It was known as a dollar clock.

Because it was so cheap and mass produced:

-  it made clocks available to a wider public, but

-  it caused wide unemployment among the clockmakers of Europe.
