Delivery Van |
This early St Cuthbert's Co-op
delivery van appears to be in remarkably good condition, possibly newly
delivered. I don't know the date or location of this photograph.
This van was registered in Edinburgh. Perhaps all St Cuthbert's
vans were registered there.
However, it may have operated
in Glasgow. I have a photo of the back of this van. In the
back of the van is a set of scales labelled 'SCWS Ltd., Glasgow'. |

Three-wheeled Milk Delivery
Vehicles
"I was home last
week visiting family and we had a discussion about
milk delivery vehicles. We can all
remember the Store (St. Cuthberts) having rather
odd-looking three-wheeled
vehicles with a triangular cab. I
think they ran on diesel.
Does anyone else recall these?
By whom the were built?"

Scammell
"I
seem to remember the three-wheeled vans. I'm sure
they were called Scammells."

I looked up
Scammell on Google Images and it found an
interesting variety of pictures of vehicles, large and small, including
the 3-wheeled Scammel Scarab vans used in railway goods yards.
Searching
Google images for Scammel Milk Float produced
a few images of 3-wheeled milk floats, including one for Unigate.

Electric Vehicles
"I'm
sure the St Cuthbert's 3-wheeled vans were electric, My friend's brother
used to drive one and he had a fatal accident with it. His name was
Tommy Mcgarry. This would have been between 1956 and 1958. He used
to deliver around Firrhill Loan, Crescent, and Drive in Colinton Mains.
I also checked BBC site 'Scotland on Film'. There is a
brief mention from Alfie Smith posted April 14 2002 indicating that they
were electric, in the last sentence of his entry."

Milk Floats
"I can answer some of the question you
have been asked about St Cuthbert's milk floats as I was employed in their
workshops as an apprentice.
From what I recall used Scammel chassis were
sent to the mechanical workshops where reconditioned steering and axles
were fitted. A new Perkins diesel engine was also fitted.
The Cabin and body on the milk floats were
made of wood by the coach building dept. This work was all carried out at
St Cuthbert's transport dept. in Gardners Crescent, Edinburgh,
supervised by the transport manager Archie Prentice."
