The Back Green

"This concert for  the Spitfire fund was held on the Air Raid Shelter in the back green of 47 Broughton Road, Edinburgh.

I was born at 47 Broughton Road in 1934.  I lived in Broughton until I was 14.

I am sitting cross legged to the left at the front of the photo, with a hat on.  The other fellow sitting in the front is my friend George (Doddie) Thompson."

"My mother remembers attending ''Spitfire Concerts' in Portsburgh Square (at the top of the West Port) during the war.

 She says that the concerts were held in the open-air, and on the roofs of some of the lower buildings. She also talks of the wonderful community spirit that existed at the time too."
