Walter Scott Bicentenary Concert

Thank you to Stephen McMahon, Munich Germany, for sending me a copy of this photograph from his collection.

Stephen wrote:

Sir Walter Scott

"This photograph shows the Edinburgh Secondary Schools Chorus and First Orchestra peforming a concert of music related to the bicentenary of Sir Walter Scott's birth. The conductor for parts of this particular concert was Neil Butterworth who composed some of the pieces we performed

The principal conductor of the orchestra was Dr. Colin O'Riordan who died in 2001."

Rehersals

"I remember this and similar concerts well - I played in the orchestra. We used to rehearse on Monday evenings in a church hall in Bruntsfield. The weekend before a concert we had rehearsals every day, and this was usually the first time we performed with the chorus and soloists.

Quiz question: What piece is being performed in the photo?
 (I know the answer.)

Who is in the Photograph?

Stephen added:

"I recognise a lot of the faces in the orchestra and chorus, and can also still recall a lot of their names. Perhaps visitors to the website will recognise someone or other."

If you are trying to recognise any of the people in this photograph, I recommend that you first click on the thumbnail image below in order to zoom-in to the photo.

School Musical in  the Usher Hall

Thank you to Eric Gold (also known to many as Eric McKenzie) for his recollections of the Usher Hall.

Eric wrote:

Usher Hall

"The Usher Hall Concert photos, above, reminds me that my cousin, George (Joe) O'Donnel, played a part there in a school musical called 'The Crookit Bawbee'.

He was a knock out.  He was a great singer.  We used to go out guising when we were small.  I haven't seen him for 30 years.

All the schools were there, at the Usher Hall, and my neighbours from the Dumbiedykes too.  I reckon that George would have made a good actor on films (ha ha ha ha).  He was a great singer

Granton Harbour

I remember we docked in Granton on a small light house ship called the Hespures.  I got George a job but he got the sack as he took the Saturday off to watch a Hibs game at Easter Road (ha ha ha ha) and with the captain being a Rangers supporter. With Hibs winning that match, he had no chance.
