Thank you to Ian Shaw, Northumberland, England, for allowing me to reproduce this photo.    Ian wrote:

Miss Hendry's Class

"This is Miss Hendry's class at Duddingston Primary School.  The photo was taken about 1959.

I am almost certain the photo was taken by Miss Hendry. I'd be amazed if she was still alive today.  Oddly, I do not recall there ever being a formal class photo taken at the same time."

Thank you Iain Brennan who replied

Miss Hendry's Class

"I've just stumbled across this amazing photo.  I think it has been taken from a larger 'School Group Photo'.

I cannot see myself in it, but I do recognise a few of my former Classmates, including the contributor, Ian Shaw, who was a pal of mine all these years ago."

Iain Brennan, Buckinghamshire, England:  November 9, 2013

I've now given Iain Brennan the latest email address that I have for Ian Shaw, so I hope that they will be able to get in touch with each other.

Here is an extract from the notes that Iain sent to me:

Miss Hendry's Class

My Class

"I was in Miss Hendry's Class.  Indeed, I recognise myself hiding in the back of this photograph. I also recognise many of my fellow Pupils."

The Photographer

"Incidentally, I doubt if Miss Hendry actually took the photo herself, as it is definitely part of a larger one, more likely taken by a professional brought in for that purpose." ***

***  Perhaps a professional photographer set up the class and took his own photos, and Miss Hendry also took her own photo of the class.  Class photos that I have seen, taken by professional photographers have invariably been taken 'straight on' rather than at a 45 degree angle!          -  Peter Stubbs:  January 13, 2013

The Teachers

"I remember:

-  Miss Hendry.  She did a lot of shouting and was handy with the belt, but what she taught me has stayed with me.

Mr. Clark, the Head Teacher.  We kind of lived in fear of him.  Maybe it was his dark suit.  I don't know!

Mrs Neilson and other teachers.  Most seemed to suffer from a bad temper.  It must have been the water!

Memories

"I have many vivid memories of events when I was at the school.  If anyone else from that period and place would like to converse, please feel free to get in touch with me.

It was a period of my life which I hold dear and, despite our fear of those teachers, I would say we received a damn good education!""
