School or Girls' Home

Thank you to Archie Foley, Joppa, Edinburgh, for sending this photograph to me.

The Photographer

"This photograph has the impressed mark 'Elsmere Studio, Portobello' in the bottom right corner, but there is no location given on the postcard back."

The Girls

"The uniforms show that the girls are divided into at least four different groups. There are various types of collars.  Some girls have ribbons with bows under the collars.   The white neckerchiefs have anchors on them and check the number of stripes on the sleeves of the girls' tunics."

Obviously wherever and whatever it was this was a place where people knew their place. Do the uniforms of the staff indicate a girls' home rather than a school?"
