Newhaven Coach Outing

"This photo was taken in Newhaven around 1957.  In fact, it  was the members of Hawthornvale Ladies' whist drive weekend trip to Chester.

The reason I know this is because my grandmother and grandfather are in the photo, and the other people in the picture are all well known to me and my family.  All of them were family friends.  My grandparents were the Olivers who stayed at No 30, Hawthornvale, Newhaven

The photo brings back very happy memories of people and times gone by"

Flucker Family

"I have only recently become aware of the extent to which my mother's family was involved in the Newhaven Fishermen and Women.

She is part of the Flucker line which is a name often seen amongst the oldest to most recent photos of the fisherwomen. Other names in the direct line are:

Wilson

Johnstone

Carnie

Combe.

No one ever talked about the Newhaven side of the family!"

The Oyster Woman

"Of the many old photos on this site there are several of Fluckers. Only one so far, I'm sure, was of my Gr Gr Gr Grandmother Barbara Johnstone Flucker (the oyster woman) from the Hill/Adamson collection of calotypes."

New Lane

Newhaven Streets - New Lane - Photograph taken before 1896 ©

"The many old photos of New Lane, Newhaven mesmerize me, as most of the Fluckers from my family were born, lived and died in Numbers 13, 14 & 15 New Lane.  I wonder who amongst the many faces were my rellies.  Likely, all of them as they seem to have mostly married within themselves."

Great Grandfather

"The one photo I do not have that I was wondering if anyone might have is of my Gr Grandfather James Carnie Flucker. He was 38 when he died in 1904. His employment was listed as 'master, steam vessel' and their address was listed as 22 Trinity Crescent.

He married Annie Elizabeth Lucy Wallace (from Peebles) and they had my Grandfather Johnstone Meredith Flockhart (name change at birth ???).  I knew my Great Gran well as she lived to 97 and died in 1962."

Kemp Family

"I was raised in 15 Jessfield Terrace from 1947 to leaving in 1966.

My pal, while I was at Trinity Academy primary school, was George Kemp.  His mother, Margaret Kemp was a member of Newhaven Church.  She is sitting in the front row the third from the left and I think that George is the small boy in the back row.

I also recognize several of the other faces in the photo but cannot remember their names.

Newhaven Fishmarket

"I'd like to see some pictures of Newhaven Fishmarket, as we bought a lot of fish there in the 1960s.  Sadly a lot of the industry now seems all but finished.

I remember the car park full of hawkers' vans, now sadly mostly no more.  I wonder what my grandmother Elizabeth, who was a fishwife, would make of it."

John Thorburn, Seahouses, Northumberland, England

Hi John:

Newhaven Fishmarket

Yes, the fishmarket is now only about a third of the size that it was in 1990, and the two kipper factories beside the fishmarket have now been demolished and have made way for new housing.

There was a Newhaven Heritage Museum at Newhaven Harbour for a few years until 2006.  The museum is now closed and the old photos and other exhibits are in storage, in the care of City of Edinburgh Museums and Galleries Dept.  You could try contacting that department to see if they have any old photos that might be of interest to you.
