Thank you to Jean Greig for sending me this photograph of her father (wearing glasses) standing beside the farrier at St Cuthbert's Grove Street stables at Fountainbridge, Edinburgh.

St Cuthbert's Stables

"In this photo, my dad, Jimmy Hathaway, is wearing the cap.  He is with the farrier (I can't mind his name) and the horse he has is 'Pie'.  The photo was probably taken at Grove Street stables.

I am almost certain that this photo you have of Gorgie with the van is my Dad:

The Pringles in their carriage, possibly at Marchmont or Bruntsfield ©

My dad worked with St Cuthberts, man and boy.  I think my dad's boss was Bob Laing and there was another man called 'Hammy'.

Van Laddies

"I was, along with my brothers and sister, a 'Van Laddie' with the store.  In fact, I think I was the first girl to get paid for doing the work .  It was hard earned, mind youI think I got £1,10s. a week.

I seem to remember that, at one time, the cart had a canopy, although trolling through your website I could not see any.
