Apprentice
Mechanic
"When I first came to Edinburgh
in 1963, at 16
years old, I got a job as an apprentice mechanic
at Auto Sales, Pitt
Street, on the corner of Fettes
Row.
- The owners
were Charlie and Bobby Woolley
- The
mechanic was Ronnie Simpson from Goldenacre.
- The
car cleaner was Jimmy Cowley from Portobello.
He says he was a singer during the war with Joe Loss
At lunchtime, we
would go round to Donald's
Cafe on the corner of Eyre Terrace,
always busy due to the good food."

"When I
was at Auto Sales, I
remember one of the workers showing me a little blue tin containing 3
condoms (French letters). The name on them was 'Clarion', but I've
not been able to trace any mention of that name anywhere."

"The building on the right in this photo was
Auto Sales' Showroom. The dark building nearest the camera was the
workshop.
The building had originally been the Runwell
Bicycle Factory. When I worked for Auto Sales, there were still a
few wrapped metal mudguards behind the entry door!"
