The Milk Train

"As a pre-teenager, I lived in Craigleith Road, near to Blackhall, from 1957 to 1962.

Quite often, I awoke in the early hours, probably around 3 to 5am, to hear a goods train to the south travelling into central Edinburgh. My mother advised me that it was the milk train, but I have no further information.

I remember that there were two dairies serving the city, namely St Cuthbert's, and Edinburgh and Dumfriesshire.

I took comfort on dark nights from hearing the train, knowing that there was someone up and about at these hours.

I'm wondering if anyone has similar recollections, or has any information on this train."

If you know or remember anything about the milk train that Malcolm refers to above, and would like to send a message to him, please email me, then I'll pass on his email address to you.

Thank you.
