Grotto
"In Craiglockhart Dell there is a small
building with a domed roof which was always referred to as 'a grotto' and
appeared to have been decorated internally with sea shells at one time.
It is on the path to Colinton Dell close to a
small footbridge I can find no record of its origins and seem to recollect
two such buildings . Anyone have any ideas? I suppose it dates from a
Romantic Ideal about 1780 or so."

Grottos
"It seems Craiglockhart Dell was part of the
grounds of Craiglockhart House and the little domed buildings WERE built
as romantic grottos.
I must assume them to be contemporaneous with
the building of the house in 1830 for the owner Professor Alexander
Monro(1773-1859) a medico famous in his day.
The house has recently been converted into
five flats which seem to be currently for sale by Rettie estate agents."

Playing
"I remember us all:
-
sledging at Glenlockhart golf course
and dragging our sledges home down Craiglockhart Avenue,
frozen through, but having had a
wonderful time.
-
playing in Craiglockhart Dell.
- having
bonfire nights on the 'Waste Ground'
on Craiglockhart Avenue opposite, the
church.
-
playing on the frozen pond at the
tennis courts at Happy Valley.
Does anybody have any
photos of Craiglockhart?
