Bill Malcolm

Edinburgh

Bill Malcolm has already sent me some of his memories of Dean Village School.  I added them to the Dean Orphanage page on the web site in 2011,

Thank you, Bill, for writing again and sending four class photos taken at Dean Village School.

The photos that Bill sent were taken around 1937-38, but I don't know the exact year or class or have any more information about the photos, so I'll not add them to the web site unless somebody emails me to tell me that they would like me to add one or more of them to the site.

The Malcolm Family

"There were four Malcolm children, my three siblings:

-  Sandy

-  John

-  Mary

-  Willie (me)

We were all born in Edinburgh and all attended Dean Village School.

Our father was a Police Constable.  He was Scottish Police Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

School

1944 - 1951

"I have recently read Peter May’s book 'The Lewis Man' whilst here on holiday in Thailand.   Vivid memories of being a pupil at Dean Village Primary School from 1944 until 1951 flooded back to me as the story unfolded."

Belford Church

"My father, John Gow Sutherland, was a postman and also the Church Officer of Belford Church.  My mother, father and latterly my two sisters, Ruth & Jennifer and myself lived in a house beneath the church."

Classes

1944 - 1951

"After attending the Dean Village School from 1945 to 1951, I went on from there to James Gillespie's High School for Girls.

I have some class photos of classes at Dean School, and can recall most of the pupils' names. Some of them lived in the Dean Village and some of us came from the surrounding environs."

Ann sent three photos to me.  See 'Recollections 4' below

Staff

"There were 2 headmasters during my time at the school:

Mr Henderson and

-  Mr Munnoch.

One of the janitors was a Mr. Lumsden.

Teachers I remember were:

-  Miss Craigie.

-  Miss Cunningham.

-  Mrs Gregg.

She was very strict and hailed from Bo'ness via her own car!"
