585 Field Squadron
Royal Engineers (TA)
"Remembrance
Day has brought many recollections to our local
papers and stirred my memories too.
My father was a Sergeant
Major in 585 Field Squadron Royal Engineers
(TA) who met at premises at 28 York Place.
I attended several Christmas parties there,
pre-war.
I remember attending
some sort of summer exercise at about age 5,
where I was allowed to use a field telephone.
It was my first experience of a telephone as they were rare in
domestic use in the mid-1930s.
The squadron was
called up just before WWII was declared; their
first base was Inchkeith. I
don't know what their duties were there or
subsequently as they moved around the UK. I
believe they saw service in North Africa after 1943.
I wonder if anyone has knowledge of the
service record of this small band of brothers?"
