1950s Fashions
"I
noticed that you had a bit here on Gents' clothing, so I'm going to
stimulate some of the ladies into contributions. As a MM
* , these are the items of ladies' clothing
that I remember. Most are from the 1950s:
Jigger Coat
A coat that I think was usually made of wool.
Topper
A jacket or short coat which sometimes had a pleat up the back and usually
went down to no more than waist level.
Duffel Jacket
or
Duffel Coat
Generally, this was made of wool and
fastened by means of wooden toggles.
'Edge
to Edge'
A summer coat that had no
buttons, or perhaps had a frog-fastening, or one large button at the
waist, or a belt.
'A
Line' Skirt
That's what it was, and usually just below knee-level
in length
Pencil Skirt A
skirt that hugged the figure and had a pleat or slit at the back.
Shift
A dress of various materials, generally with a 'A Line' shape.
Swagger Coat
A coat, from memory fastened with one button near the top."
Bob added:
"I'll be quite happy to see an y
amendments or any adjustments to the above."
