Motorcycle

"While I was serving my apprenticeship at Ferranti Ltd,  I wanted to buy a motorcycle to travel to Ferranti at Crewe Toll from my home at Shandon, but I couldn't afford it on my wages."

REME TA Unit

"I therefore joined a REME (Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) TA Unit based at Alnwickhill Road, Edinburgh.  I think it was the 42nd Light Anti-Aircraft Unitt but my memory is not as good as it used to be.

I attended weekly drills, weekend exercises and the annual camp, but then I was told that as I worked on radar research I would not be able to be called up in an emergency, and I was chucked out.

They did tell me that if I was very keen to stay in the TA, there was a Parachute Engineering unit that I could join.  That definitely did not appeal, so that was the end of my TA service."
