"I started work in James Bowen's in 1974. I worked in the Engine Shop.

Frankie McSorley was my gaffer.

-  Ian Hardy did repairs to gearboxes.

My job was to strip down Gardner diesel engines and overhaul them, and also repair them in situ. on ERF trucks."

Machine Shop

"We had a Machine Shop where the cylinder heads were resurfaced, and new valve seats fitted. Others who worked there, were:

-   George Meikle, Workshop Manager from Musselburgh.

 Davy Ross Workshop Foreman.

 Andrew Watson, Chargehand.

-   Tommy Muir, from Tranent, also a Chargehand.

Walter (Wattie) Muir, Thomas' brother from Whitecraigs.

Walter worked in the Tractor shop.

Jimmy Johnson.  He ruled.in the Engine Shop.

-  Sandy Baxter.

Ian Logan.

Jimmy Sutherland, who left to become a policeman.

 Andrew Johnston, Machine Shop Foreman.

Charlie Young, turner on a lathe.

Tam Wyllie, turner on a lathe."

The Bosses

"The bosses, Andrew and James were both gentlemen. Sons David and Alistair took over, but sadly, due to bad under-management, the firm folded.

I was made redundant, then was declared disabled, so never worked again."
