"I started work in James Bowen's in 1974.
I worked in the Engine Shop.
Frankie McSorley was
Ian Hardy did repairs to gearboxes.
My job was to strip down Gardner diesel
engines and overhaul them, and also repair them in situ. on
"We had a
Machine Shop where the cylinder heads were
resurfaced, and new valve seats fitted. Others who worked there, were:
Meikle, Workshop Manager from Musselburgh.
Davy Ross Workshop
Muir, from Tranent,
also a Chargehand.
(Wattie) Muir, Thomas' brother from Whitecraigs.
worked in the Tractor shop.
Johnson. He ruled.in
the Engine Shop.
Jimmy Sutherland, who left
to become a policeman.
Machine Shop Foreman.
Charlie Young, turner on a
Tam Wyllie, turner on
"The bosses, Andrew
and James were both gentlemen. Sons David and Alistair took over,
but sadly, due to bad under-management,
the firm folded.
I was made redundant, then was declared
disabled, so never worked again."
