Isobel Pillatt

Dores, Highland, Scotland

Thank you to Isobel Pillatt, who was born in the Lawnmarket and now lives at Dores on the shores of Loch Ness, Highland, Scotland, who wrote:

My Mum

"Can anyone remember my mum, Marion Pugh from the Lawnmarket.  She was a small woman, Glesga extraction.  I used to travel on top of the pram with the wash."

Boy

"Can anyone remember the boy who was killed by his dad down the Royal Mile?  My mum was going to the wash house that day and stopped in.

I must have been so young, but it had a profound effect on me. I remember folks showing his wee footprints. I'd like to put him to bed, at peace."

Memories

"I remember:

-  Gabby Hay, the coachman at St Giles

-  Italian shops being stoned

-  Being trod on by a horse, outside the 'accumulator shop', opposite Deacon Brodie's."

Marion Pugh

"To Isobel Pillatt:

"I lived in Melbourne Place (part of George IV Bridge).

I was Marion Pugh's best friend throughout primary school, until she moved away from the Lawnmarket.  In fact, I wrote to her about six or seven years ago, inviting her to a reunion for people from the Lawnmarket and surrounding areas.

I think she lives round about Newcastle way.  Two of your Aunts came to the reunion, Violet and another."

John Martin

Thank you to John Martin who wrote:

George Robertson

"My Father John Martin (Snr) can recall many different stories about the old South side of Edinburgh as well as many other parts of our great toon.

He tells me that the young man who was killed by his father was George Robetson, from Tron Square, who had just been released from prison.

This sad incident took place when my father was 16 yrs old and working in the pits. Mr Roberson also killed his wife, although his daughter survived.

I'd love to think this info will ease the dreams of Isobel Pillatt!"

Thanks John.  I've now passed on this message to Isobel Pillatt.

Thank You

"Please thank John Martin jnr for his reply above, re the murder in Tron Square.  I can now, as an adult, look it up and put it to bed.  It has been with me for almost 60 years.

Thanks again John.

Thanks Isobel:  I've now emailed John to let him know about the reply that you have added above.
