Thank you to Fiona MacKinnon who wrote:

Sound Recordings

"I wonder if you could help me.  We are working with the School of Scottish Studies in Edinburgh to make the sound recordings in their archives available to the public through our Kirk o Riches website

We have a few recordings from 1964 of people from Newhaven and Leith who were recorded by Hamish Henderson in Lamb's House.  However, we need permission from the families of the people who were recorded before the recordings can be put online.

Perhaps, someone reading this message might remember some of the people that were interviewed,or indeed be related to them.  Most of them were elderly when they were recorded.  The recordings give a very interesting insight into what life was like for them in their younger days.  I'd be grateful for any help at all.

People Interviewed

These are the people from Newhaven and Leith who were interviewed in 1964:

Mrs Drennan, who lived at Seafield Avenue, Newhaven in 1964

Jemima Liston (née Hall) who lived at 81 Main Street, Newhaven and had a brother, Willie.

Miss Liston (sister-in-law of  Jemima Liston) who lived at 4 Anne Street, Newhaven.

Alexander Rutherford (Sandy) who lived at flat 34 (or 36) Annfield Street, Newhaven - opposite the school'.

Elizabeth Brunton who lived at 31 Cambridge Avenue, Leith, and seems to have known a lot about selling fish;  perhaps she was a street-seller.

Isabella Buchan who lived at 22 Prince Regent Street, Leith, and was  possibly a street-seller.

My Dissertation

Growing up in Leith

"I'm a MSc student at the University of Edinburgh. I've been working on my dissertation in which I'm talking to people about in two neighborhoods of Edinburgh.

I wonder if you possibly knew anyone who might be willing to talk to me about their experiences growing up / living in Morningside or Leith.

I’m part of a research project called Edinburgh Speaks, and we’re looking at how people in Edinburgh get along and communicate with each other. We’re visiting a number of neighbourhoods and communities within the city to talk to people about their experiences living here.

We’re interested in learning about how they see their neighbourhood, the rest of Edinburgh, and other places in Scotland.

A Conversation

"If you’re interested in participating, I’d like to have a conversation with you. I’ll ask you some questions, and you can answer however you’d like.

I’d like to record what you say, but your information will be kept completely anonymous (or, if you prefer, we can make sure you receive credit for your contribution to this project)."

Rolls Royce

"I am currently trying to find any information about or photos of the car that I drove in Leith during the 1950s and 1960s.

It was a Rolls Royce 25/30 model, Registration No. DOP 500 and was owned by the Metal Merchant,  A(?) Chalmers.

Does anybody remember this car?
What colour was it then? Pictures?
Any information or photos would be interesting!"

Thank you to Laurie Thompson who replied to Guy Clarke's message above.

Rolls Royce

"Here is the information that I found on the DVLA website about Rolls Royce DOP 500 (a black, 4257cc, 1937 model).

-  It is currently untaxed.

-  Its last tax was due on 1st December 1995.

-  It doesn't appear to have a SORN, so is it in a museum, illegally stored in some barn, or has it been exported?

Good luck to Guy with his further researches!"
