Marching

"I have fond memories of attending Milton House Primary School.  The everlasting memory I have is of marching up and down the stairs to the dulcet tones of military music.

It certainly kept us all in time!"

School Name

"I've discovered that the school is now called 'The Royal Mile School'.  Does anybody know the reason for this name change?"

"My Dad was the Janitor at the school for 25 years and was there when the name was changed.  A number of primary schools in the area were amalgamated and they changed the name to try and keep everyone happy."

John wrote

Houses

Chessels Court

"I was born in 1949 and lived at 4 Chessels Court on the top floor - last house. There were 4 houses on each floor.  They had outside toilets and gas light.

It was a really great place to live - with an air raid shelter separating our close from Maitland's Close.

Dumbiedykes Road

"Then I stayed in Dumbiedykes Road with brother  Tom and sister Rose.  We were next door to Billy and Colin McCuaig.

Others I remember are:

-  Denis and Alan Ross.

-  Willie and Helen McIntyre.

Our houses were at the bottom of Brown Street, and we would often play football in the square at Salisbury Street."

"I went to Milton House Primary School in the late 1950s.

People in my class were:

-  Alex Robertson

-  Ronnie Smith

-  Pat Campbell

-  Davie Alexander

-  John Ramsay.

Our teacher was Miss Weir who took over from Miss J Smith."

James Clark's School

"I was at James Clarks School ('Jimmies') for a few years after leaving Milton House.

In my class were:
