"I was passing Newington Station today and thought you might like to see all that's left of it.

Newington Station - 2009 ©

I think it was 1962 when my entire primary school - Inch (now Liberton) Primary - filed down the steps from Mayfield Gardens on to the station platform before cramming on to the TV Train which took us for a day trip to Pitlochry

We build our sets and rehearse our plays there.  Entering through the front door, is like going into the Tardis, as once downstairs, the whole place extends out through the back.

Question

St Cuthbert's Store - Fire!

"Would you or any of your contributors know in which year there was a serious fire in St Cuthbert's Nicolson Street Store?

My mother bought a fire-damaged fridge (our first) in the sale afterwards.

It had to be before 1963 as we lived in South Oxford Street at the time of the fire.  We moved to the new Cornbank Estate in Penicuik in 1963."

1962

"The fire at St Cuthberts store in Nicholson street would have been in 1962, as my wife and I had just moved up to live in West Nicolson street then.

I remember the fire well, as I was working on the burnt-out section, pulling it down.

My best and worst memory is the day was when I went through the  burnt-out floor, dead above the bakery department.  God was on my side that day:  I had no injuries, just a red face and heaps of flak from my mates."

William Thorburn

Grocers

"There used to be a grocers/wine merchants in Salisbury Place, Newington, called Wm Thorburn.  Does anybody remember this shop or the people who worked there?"

Question

"I'm looking for information about this former church in Hope Park Terrace. Above what I take to have been the main door there is a star of David.

Can anyone tell me the significance of that? Was the church used as a synagogue at some time or is the explanation quite different?"

Thank you to Terry Cox who replied:

Hope Park Terrace

Former Church

"I've had a look at various books I have but, disappointingly, the only thing I can find on this church is this entry in Pevsner:

Hope Park Congregational Church

HOPE PARK CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, Hope Park Terrace. Disused. Lombardy Romanesque by Sutherland & Walker, 1875-1876, with a small tower over the entrance. Horseshoe-galleried interior.

The church has been listed in various P.O. directories as Hope Park & Buccleuch Congregational Church, so it doesn't look as if it was used as a synagogue.

This is probably not what Linda is looking for, but there you are!"
