Prestonfield Primary School
"When I lived in Edinburgh, I attended St
John's Primary school in Portobello and then Holy Cross Academy
I studied Mechanical Engineering at Bristo
Technical College and Napier College. Both are now part of Edinburgh
University.
I played golf at Duddingston Golf Club and
soccer for Portobello United and Joppa Arsenal. I loved to go to Arthur's
Seat, Portobello swimming pool and the Baths on Bath Street."

Portobello then
Australia
"I attended Towerbank school in 1941 and
then on to Portobello secondary school. I became a bricklayer
by trade and left for Australia in 1963. I joined the RAAF in
1967 and served 20 years. I am a Vietnam vet, now retired.
I'd love to make contact with any old
school mates."

Portobello then
Australia
"I was at Portobello High School for
many years, and left when I was around 17/18 in 1962 or 1963 having,
I believe, passed my Highers.
I remember:
- Dorothy
- Alex Curry
- Charlie Burrows
- Chris Bradford
to name but a few.
I was Captain of the 2nd Fifteen Rugby,
then played for the 1st, and was a 6th Form Prefect.

Hi Ian:
Thanks for your message
above.
Pictures
Unfortunately, I don't have
any pictures for you.
The closest I can get with pictures are these of Portobello
Secondary School, but they were taken in the early-1950s, about a
decade before you were at the school.

Memories
The only memories of the school that I've received so far are
the brief Recollections 1 and
2 above. However, I've now added
your comments as Recollections 3.
I hope that might encourage other former pupils of the school
to contact me with their memories and photos from the school.
If anybody does contact me, I'll probably add what they send to
this page.

Memories
"As an old Porty man, the memories of
the good times of your life , float back as one gets older.
Now 73 and retired from business life just a year ago , the memories
of my younger days keep floating back."
Rugby
"I was at the old Portobello High
School, leaving after taking my Highers. I played rugby for
the First Fifteen, then left in 1962 /63, my memory relating to
which year is iffy.
However at the age of 16 , my parents
had to move south linked to my father's profession. Thus, I was put
into b&b with nice family in Bath Street to complete my schooling.
I then joined the old SMT on a management course for five year.
That served me well.
Flat at Joppa
"During that time, I shared a flat in
Joppa with friends. All were Porty rugby players and so life
was a mix of rugby, golf and parties of good nature.
I was one of the first serving Officers
of a newly formed Portobello FP Rugby Club, along with John Reid who
was President."

Reply to Ian?
Ian tells me that he is looking for some old pictures of the
original school at Portobello, along with other relevant
information. He says:
"Memories from 1960 to 1975 would be
great."
So, if you have any photos or memories that you think might be of
interest to Ian, please email me to let me know, then I'll pass on
his email address to you.
Thank you.

Rugby
"I read with interest the email
from Ian Kerr above and your response.
Ian must have been around my vintage as
I was at Portobello High School from 1958 to 1961. At that time the
rugby sports masters were Mr Bailey and Mr MacArthur with some help
from Mr McLennan who was off-sider to Mr Connor.
I played with Alan Whitsun(?), Kevin
longmuir(?) and Bill O'Brien if my memory serves me right. I also
think George Thompson was in the team.
I do recall that we went through 1960
undefeated. That was some feat at the time, as we played a few
teams above our weight for age classification.
I now live in Australia now and
would love to hear from any former pupils."
