Question

Greengrocer

"My brother remembers my mother working in a greengrocers in Potterrow around 1958, but he cannot remember the name of the shop.

Does anyone remember the name of a greengrocer in Potterow in the 1950s?

Reply to  Lorraine?

I've looked through the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories for 1940 and 1950, but have not found any greengrocers in Potterrow listed in them.

These directories do have lists of Edinburgh greengrocers, but I expect that only a small proportion of greengrocers chose (and paid) to be listed in them.

If you think you can help to answer Lorraine's question, please email me.

Thank you.

Grocer

"There was a shop at 36+38 Potterrow.  It was owned in 1915 by the Trustees of the late Hugh Paterson, per Miss Mary S Paterson, 38 Henderson Row, per Charles White & Son 9 Nicolson Square.

Charles White & Son are property factors who still operate from a shop in Morningside Road.

The shop was  run as a Grocers.  It is shown on the Valuation Roll as being occupied by Valentine Byrne, but of course, the name of the shop may have been different in 1958."
