1951
"When I was
sixteen, back in 1951,
I worked for a while in Weston's
Biscuit Factory along Slateford Road. My
best memories are of:
-
when
Workers Playtime came over the tannoy. We
would all sing along and perhaps have a
wee boogie till we got told off.
- the
lovely Friday Payday. We'd queue up
at a window and get our little envelopes,
all handwritten up - any mistakes
corrected there and then. Then, we went
along to the Staff counter where we could buy bag of loose biscuits
for a shilling and, of course,
a bag of lovely chocolate mallow
tea cakes, maybe a bit bashed but lovely
anyway.
-
last but not least,
all the little romances that flourished behind the stacked biscuit
tins."
