Thank you to Elizabeth Hulse, Canada who wrote
George Wilson
"I came across your Photographic Society of
Scotland listing for George Wilson of Edinburgh University and Elm
Cottage, Whitehouse, which states that he joined the PSS in 1856 and that
his membership ended some time before 1865.
George Wilson, who was born in 1818, in fact
died in 1859. At the time of his death, he was the first director of
the Industrial Museum of Scotland, now the Royal Museum of Scotland,
and also Professor of Technology at the University of Edinburgh, the only
person to hold this chair.
Elm Cottage, a pair of houses on Blackford
Road built by the Wilson family, is still standing."
Elizabeth added:
Daniel Wilson
"I am the editor of a volume of essays on
George's brother, the antiquarian and archaeologist Daniel Wilson.
Daniel had a lifelong interest in
photography. He emigrated to Canada in 1853 to teach at the University of
Toronto, but there is no doubt that had he remained in Scotland, he would
also have become a member of the PSS.
