NOTE
The
Free Church of Scotland was formed by ministers who broke away from the
Church of Scotland in 1843. The Hill
and Adamson partnership, based at
Rock House, produced calotype photos of many of the dissenting
ministers. DO Hill used these photos
to create his painting of The
Disruption, featuring 457 people associated with the disruption, at
the First General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland.
This
painting measures 12ft x 4ft 8ins. It took Hill 23 years to
paint. The painting may, in fact, have been completed by his
wife.
The
painting was purchased by The Free Church of Scotland in 1866, and now
hangs in the Free Presbytery Hall of Church of Scotland, 15 North Bank
Street, Edinburgh 1 |
