The comments below are an extract from a page in the book: A Companion Guide to Photography in the National Galleries of Scotland.

They refer to a project undertaken by Burns in Edinburgh, similar to that undertaken by Annan in Glasgow.

Archibald Burns

(active 1858 - 1880)

"In 1871, Burns was commissioned by the city's Improvement Trust to photograph the closes between the Old Quadrangle of the University and the Cowgate prior to their demolition later in the year.

According to a contemporary minute, Burns's twenty six photographs excited 'deep interest' as a 'faithful record of this old historic part of the City which in a few days will be entirely swept away'."
