The
only photograph I have seen by this photographer is a carte de visite in the
National Portrait Gallery collection. The subject is a man dressed
in a kilt with a sword, wearing a bonnet with a feather in it.
On
the reverse of the carte de visite is printed:
JW
Powell, successor to TH Douglas,
1 South Hanover Street.

JW
Powell appears in the 1881 census, described as photographer,
aged 60, born in England, living at 8 Kirk Street, Edinburgh. He was
a lodger living with James and Margaret Grieve. James was a Clerk
(Accountant).
