J B Watson

1937

Thank your to Reginald Witsch, Cologne, Germany, for allowing me to reproduce the pictures above of a photographic wallet from one of the two J B Watson's shops in Edinburgh in 1937.

This wallet is in the same style as other DB Watson wallets that I have seen from the 1930s, all featuring Edinburgh street scenes including JB Watson's shops.

Reginald wrote:

My Father's Visit to Edinburgh

"Checking through some of my father's old photos, I found this old wallet full of old black and white negatives  -  no views of Edinburgh, I'm afraid.

I know that my father spent a few weeks in Britain in 1937.  He seems to have met a Scottish girl called A Fergie. there.  Her name is on the wallet and I also found some postcards sent by her."

Pictures on the Wallet

"The front page of the wallet shows a policeman on a street crossing, his right arm pointing at J B Watson's shop.

In the top-right corner of the picture on the wallet, in a deep brown box, under the heading 'J B Watson', it says

OPTICIAN AND
PHOTOGRAPHIC DEALER

13-15 Shandwick Place
& 3 Frederick Street
EDINBURGH

On the back of the wallet there is a picture showing what was apparently the other Watson shop,  On the left, you see a large clock showing 10.33am, and on the right, Watson's shop, some pedestrians and a few cars.

The date of the order is 6 August 1937.  The Order No is 8104.  It is for 12 prints, in 1A size."

Pictures on the Wallet

Yes, Reginald:

 - The picture on the front of the wallet features J B Watson's shop at 3 Frederick Street, close to the centre of Princes Street.

- The picture on the back of the wallet features J B Watson's shop at 13-15 Shandwick Place, close to the West End of Princes Street.  This view looks along Shandwick Place from Princes Street.

The large clock in the street in this picture was close to Maule's (later Binns', now Fraser's) store .  Here is another picture featuring the clock.  J B Watson's shop was a few yards along Shandwick Place, the street leading to the right out of the lower-right corner of this photo.
