The Dome
14 George Street |
The Dome is near the east end
of George Street, on the south side of the street, close to St Andrew
Square.
Brief History of the Building
The Dome was built as Head
Office for the Commercial Bank of Scotland to a design by architect David
Rhind (1808-1883). Its foundation stone was laid in 1844.
- Commercial Bank of Scotland and National Bank of Scotland amalgamated
in 1959 to form The National Commercial Bank of Scotland. This
building became the bank's Head Office.
- The National Commercial Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland amalgamated
in 1969 to form Royal Bank of Scotland Ltd, and this building became the
George Street Office - the Head Office of Royal Bank of Scotland Ltd being
nearby, on the opposite side of St Andrew Square.
Here is a photo that I took of Royal Bank of Scotland staff working
'behind the counter' in the bank in 1993. They are in the same part
of the building as Photo 1 at the top of this page.

- Royal Bank of Scotland moved out of the building in 1993 and
sold it. It was purchased by the local company, Caledonian Heritable
Ltd who converted it to become 'The Dome'. |
