Comment 1

"Chignon hair styles with ears exposed were popular 1860-70 and artificial hair was popular, 1870-80."  ['Dating Old Photographs'  Robert Pols]

"My guess is that it is a photo of Margaret Tunny (1841-77)."

Comment 2

"These two photos  are of Margaret (Wilson) Tunny.  I am of the opinion that they would probably both have been taken between 1867 and 1870, when she would have been aged about 25-28.  She was born in June 1842.  (But see comment 3 below.)

My decision for this date is based on the JGT logo on the reverse of the CDVs indicating they were produced during Tunny’s period at Princes Street.

In the group photo below, Margaret does not fully look the part of being married to a successful businessman (i.e. her clothes and her hair are rather simple, more indicative of a studio employee or nanny).

However, in these photos, presumably taken after their marriage,

Margaret is a lot more glamorous. Note how she is wearing a very similar, if not the same, brooch in both photos. This is quite likely to be one of Tunny’s enamelled brooches

The desk that Margaret is sitting at in Photo No.6 also appears in other CDVs that I have from Tunny’s Princes Street studio days."

"In fact, the address of the studios on the backs of the carte de visite are:

-  For the first photo on the left, 93 Princes Street.  This would suggest that the photo was taken around 1860-68, presumably towards the end of this period.

 -  For the photo on the right, 93 Princes Street AND 11 Salisbury Place.  This would suggest that the photo was taken around 1871-74."

The above dates are based on the studio dates given in the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories."
