Tuck's
description on the back
of this card reads:
"Canongate Tolbooth, situated about half way
down the street of the same name (i.e.
Canongate) and on the north side of the
road, is a quaint building in the French style of architecture with
turrets, and a projecting clock dating from 1591.
Built into the wall is the pillar of the old
St John's Cross, to which is still attached the ring to which criminals
condemned to the pillory were fastened."
