Sandcastle in Castle Street

Flights to Barcelona

During the week beginning May 17, 2010, a sand sculpture was created in Castle Street to advertise the launch of Spanair's new direct route between Edinburgh and Barcelona.

The sculpture gradually took shape during the week, with 100 free flight tickets to Barcelona hidden somewhere in the sand.  This photo was taken on Friday May 21, as the sculpture neared completion.

The sculpture had a short life.  The first hundred people to arrive at the sculpture on Saturday May 22 to see its unveiling were invited to dig for one minute at 10am to find tickets.

The Sculpture

The sculpture was built by Kate Robinson.  It used 15 tons of sand, and included landmarks from Barcelona and Edinburgh.

This view looks to the south down Castle Street towards the sculpture.  Princes Street and the base of Castle Rock in Princes Street Gardens can be seen in the background.
