Martin Stoggell wrote: "I took this photo in the Cowgate as a kid around 1970. I went back a few times until I felt the light was in the right direction. I think I used a Nikkormat to take the photo. The wall, where 'The Rag Store' writing is, was painted red. I believe they paid a few pence for old clothes. Martin also took this photo of the same scene in 2004. It also shows Bannerman's Public House on the south side of the Canongate, to the right of the South Bridge arch. In both photos above, one of the arches of George IV Bridge, the next crossing of Cowgate to the west, can be seen in the distance. |

Rag Store "This is the rag store that, as a child in the 1950’s, I visited almost every Saturday to sell the old clothes I had collected by going around the houses, knocking on doors, in order to earn some extra pocket money.
