The gravestone in the background on the left is to David Scott, 1807-49

David Octavius Hill

The gravestone in the foreground is to David Octavius Hill who together with Robert Adamson - the 'Hill & Adamson' partnership - produced many calotype photos from their studio at Rock House, Calton Hill, Edinburgh between 1843 and 1847.

The inscription on the gravestone reads:

DAVID OCTAVIUS HILL RSA

BORN 1802  DIED 1870

FOR 43 YEARS, SECRETARY

OF THE ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY

HE WAS A MAN

OF UPRIGHT NOBLE

AND UNSELFISH CHARACTER

WHO SACRIFICED MUCH

FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF

THE FINE ARTS OF HIS COUNTRY

AMELIA ROBERTSON PATON

SCULPTOR

BORN 1820  DIED 1904
