On 1 September 1842, Queen Victoria arrived at Granton Harbour on board the Royal Yacht, 'Royal George' 'Royal George' An elaborate system of signals had been devised to let the Magistrates and citizens of Edinburgh know when she had arrived, but these signals did not work and as a result, there was confusion in the streets of Edinburgh when it was realised that she had arrived sooner than expected.
