The author, Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), was born in Edinburgh, son of Thomas Stevenson a noted lighthouse engineer. He lived with his family at 17 Heriot Row and used to play in these gardens which ran along the southern side of the street. He would have been able to see Farmer Wood's cattle pond from his bedroom window. Robert Louis Stevenson aged 3 This pond may have been the inspiration for Skeleton Island, an island in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, Treasure Island, published in 1883. |
