Thank you to Bill Hall, Leith, Edinburgh, for allowing me to reproduce this photo of farming at Ratho.  This is one of several photos taken in and around Ratho that Bill has sent to me.

When might this photo have been taken?

Archie and John Tait

"This photo was taken about 1912.  The man with the plough is my great grand uncle, Archie Tait.  He is son of  John Tait, the banksman on the right in this photo:

The Clark Family

"Archie joined the Lovat Scouts, along with two of his cousins, in the 1st World War.  When he came out after the war, he joined Edinburgh City Police as a Mounted Policeman. (I will send photos of him in uniform on horseback.)

When retired from Police, he became a security man at the General Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh.

When he died he was given all the honours at the funeral.  The coffin was led by a police horse."
