Shrubhill

Roadworks

The photograph above was taken in August 2007, as work began on moving the pipes and cables beneath Leith Walk in preparation for laying the tram lines for Edinburgh's new trams, due to operate between Leith and Edinburgh Airport from around 2010.

Shrubhill Tram Works

This photo was taken from the top deck of an open-top bus travelling up Leith Walk.  It looks across Leith Walt to the site of the former Edinburgh Corporation Transport works at Shrubhill where:

-  large  winding gear for  Edinburgh cable cars could be found in the early-1900s

-   trams were built, and repaired until the 1950s

-   buses were repaired until the 1990s

New Housing

New housing is planned for this site. The development appears on large hoardings in front of the site, facing onto Leith Walk  but the advert is now almost entirely hidden by the trees in this photo.
