Thank you to John Stirling for allowing me to reproduce this
photo. The photo is taken from a collection of glass
plates that John rescued from being destroyed in 1974. The photographer is not known.
Some of the other photos from this series are known to have
been taken between about 1910 and 1920. |
Union Canal, Merchiston
I think it's very
likely that this photo would have been taken on the Union Canal,
in Edinburgh. Looking at the housing in the background, I
believe it may have been taken somewhere around Merchiston,
about 1 mile SW of the canal basin at Fountainbridge, now
Edinburgh Quay
Here is another
photo from the same period. This one was taken at the
Edinburgh University Boat Club's boathouse at Meggetland, about
1 1/4 miles from the canal basin at
Fountainbridge.
