Looking down on Princes Street

and Princes Street Gardens from Edinburgh Castle

These views look down on Princes Street and the Ross Bandstand in West Princes Street Gardens from Edinburgh Castle.

People who have viewed the 1950s photograph on the Flickr web site have  commented on how small the trees in Princes Street Gardens were then, compared to their size today.  Comparison of the two photos above confirms this.

Some of the princes Street shops are the same in both photos. Other shops have been demolished and replaced over the intervening period.

Ally McGurk who provided this photo writes:

Date

"I'm not sure of the date, but I can see a tram trundling along Princes St, so that dates it a bit"

Ally McGurk, July 17, 2007

Trams and no roadworks, so it must be February 1956 or earlier.

Peter Stubbs:  August 6, 2007
