Portobello Open Air Bathing Pool

Portobello Open Air Bathing Pool was between Portobello Power Station, now demolished, and the beach.  The pool opened in 1936 and was demolished in 1980.

Ally McGurk who provided this photo writes:

Date

"Edinburgh's biggest swimming pool, until the Commonwealth Pool was built in 1970.  Portobello Pool was only open in the summer months. The first person to enter the water each season was given a free pass for the rest of the season.

The water was fifteen feet deep under the high diving board.  We were scared to swim over it as kids."
